AAUW's Expanding Your Horizons:

In 1976, the Math/Science Network created Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH) Conferences as an intervention strategy, designed to nurture girls' interest in mathematics and science courses and to encourage them to expand their career visions to include science and mathematics based-careers. Since the first Expanding Your Horizons Conference was held at Mills College in Oakland, California in 1976, more than 350,00 sixth through twelfth-grade young women and approximately 47,000 parents and educators have attended EYH Conferences in 32 states. Each EYH conference is organized by local volunteers, who find an appropriate site, recruit local women as presenters, raise funds from local organizations, and generate publicity within the community. The Math/Science Network provides materials that local groups can use to help in all of these tasks.

AAUW's Reading Is Fundamental:

Three times a year AAUW Texas Branch volunteers in conjunction with other local non-profit groups, show up in third-grade classes at different schools throughout the Arlington school district to give each child a brand new book. The Arlington AAUW-sponsored RIF program is 25 years old this year and is the oldest continuing RIF program in Texas. Over 4,500 books were distributed to targeted schools in 1997.

The RIF program was founded 30 years ago in Washington, D.C. by a teacher who believed handing out books to young children would help spark interest in reading. Today the program is found in all 50 states and, since 1975, has gotten federal dollars from Congress through the Department of Education. Teachers are invited to make book suggestions to the AAUW. The students get to choose their books from a wide selection that include favorite nonfiction series as well as books by popular authors.
